Tracy Brabin MP was “deeply humbled” by the passion, hard work and dedication of local NHS staff during a visit to Dewsbury and District Hospital.

Ms Brabin was given an extensive tour of her constituency hospital which included the Emergency Department, the Frailty Unit and the Rosewood Centre.

The MP, who last month revealed the extent of the impact the NHS recruitment crisis is having on local hospitals, took a particular interest in the impact it is having on the hospital as winter pressures increase.

Batley and Spen MP Tracy Brabin said: “The people of Batley and Spen rely on Dewsbury and District Hospital so it’s important I understand the challenges it faces.

“It is clear that the nationwide recruitment crisis across our NHS is having an impact, but the effect on patients is being mitigated thanks to the passion and hard work of staff at the hospital.

“What really struck me was the dedication, kindness and compassion shown by the various teams I had the pleasure of meeting.

“I will do everything in my power to ensure Dewsbury and District has the staffing and resources it needs to continue to serve our community.”

During her visit to the Rosewood Centre, which provides palliative day support and therapy, Ms Brabin bumped into old friend Peter Noble, who founded Age Concern in Birstall and has served the community for many years.

After 25 years running the service, Peter stepped down last year.

Ms Brabin said: “I really can’t overstate the importance of Peter’s amazing work in our community – he’s a real superhero.

“After my dad died I persuaded my mum to go to Age Concern in Birstall and it gave her a real lifeline in what was an incredibly difficult time.”

Last month Ms Brabin led a debate in the House of Commons on NHS staffing nationwide, highlighting the recruitment challenges faced by Mid Yorkshire Hospital Trust which runs Dewsbury Hospital.

The MP called on the Government to take responsibility and urgently address the recruitment crisis.
