On the first day of this year’s Great Get Together, I was lucky enough to spend the afternoon with the incredibly hardworking team at Upper Batley High – an exceptional school equipping their young men with curiosity, creativity and empathy.
It was an enormous pleasure to officially open their Upper Batley Bookshelf, an honesty library pioneered by Mrs Dent and their Creatives Team. After twelve long weeks of lockdown, this library will provide many pupils with a wonderful opportunity to rediscover their passions for learning and reading.
Led by the inspiring Ms Vickers, the school has been a local lifeline throughout Covid-19, mounting a four-week donation drive for Batley Food Bank. With teachers delivering weekly hampers to vulnerable residents, the brilliant Grant family taking food bank donations right from their lawn, and the staff and students dropping off ‘pocket hugs’ to thank the people of Carlinghow for their generosity, the school truly embodies the spirit of the Great Get Together.
